I feel really bad that it has been so long since I have updated this page. But today is the day I get with it and do some writing.
What I have been reading since my last blog:
Talent is Overrated, What really separates World-Class performers from everybody else by Geoff Colvin. Turns out it isn’t being gifted but serious deliberate practice. This book was interesting and helped me better understand what I must do if I am to improve.
God is not Great, How religion poisons everything by Christopher Hitchens. I read so many Christians books I thought it would only be fair to read the “other side”. As I read there are no real surprises. Religion has often gone awry and been harmful. The book does a good job of pointing them all out while omitting all of the things religion has done well and how it has improved the world. I have thought about these objections before and continue to be a committed believer. Although he makes some good points and valid criticisms; he doesn’t not talk about a world where there is no God. I think the former USSR and China show that a world without God is not a place anyone would want to live.
Why Don’t Students Like School? A cognitive scientist answers questions about how the mind works and what it means for the classroom. This book is written to teachers who have a traditional class room. It has been helpful for me to better understand the nature of teaching and learning. Although the print is small, paragraphs are long and it has not been an easy read.
The Myth or Multitasking, how doing it all gets nothing done. Unlike the last book this is large print and really simple. It reminds me of the Prayer of Jabez. The book did give me more reasons to believe what I already seemed to know, multitasking is a myth. It also provided me with a hand game I can play with anyone who disagrees with me which will help me to win any argument I am in over this subject.
Coming soon, next blog, what I have been thinking about.
