Well, since we went to Rothenberg this past weekend the topic of Gluhwein came up. I decided I would post this recipe with the disclaimer that you can substitute apple juice for the wine and still have a warm drink. Here in Germany this is what is called Kinder punsch. Gluhwein (a mulled hot wine) a Christmas treat found in every German Christkindel Market 1 lemon (I use an orange) 4 sticks cinnamon 4 whole cloves 4-8 sugar cubes (I use 8) 3 ¼ c. full bodied red wine (I use the cheapest red available) Peel the orange or lemon and slice into thin slices. In small saucepan combine all ingredients and heat over low heat. (I find a double boiler works best – if you don’t have one, it is important to heat slowly – do not boil). When warm serve in heatproof glasses or mugs. Enjoy.
